Golden Lei Maka Necklace

In collaboration with Leihekili we present the last of a 3-piece mini collection.

Ancient Hawaiian kapa was decorated with hāluʻa, or watermarks. One of the geometric designs our ancestors used is called "makaʻupenapūpū," a pattern of intersecting lines and dots representing the eyes of the fishing net and shells. The solid gold bar of the golden lei maka ending with a kūpeʻe shell is a literal depiction of the lines and dots of the hāluʻa used to adorn our past and now modern day attire. Its name comes from 2 Hawaiian words, “lei” meaning “adornment” and “maka” from the name "makaʻupenapūpū".

Length of pendant: 3.25"
